Washington DC Taiwanese School (華府台灣學校; Hoahuo Taioaan Haghau; Hua-fu Taiwan Hsueh-hsiao) is a Taiwanese-American nonprofit organization that was established in 1983. The school offers classes on Sunday afternoons at Cabin John Middle School in Potomac, MD, with a curriculum focused on language learning, cultural immersion, and community engagement.

Washington DC Taiwanese School (WDCTS) is sponsored by the Taiwanese Youth Arts Foundation (TYAF). Teaching Taiwanese languages and preserving Taiwanese heritage and culture has been the mission of WDCTS. The tradition of the school has always been frequent interactions between teachers/staff and parents/students, and providing diverse ways of learning. In addition to the regular classroom sections, the school also offers the Taiwanese experience to students and friends through folk art demonstrations, cultural performances, Taiwanese children’s play, and so on. There are fall and spring semesters each year, which start in September and January respectively. Presently, students aged 1.5 years old to adult are accepted. Washington DC Taiwanese School welcomes students from all fluency levels and those interested in joining the school staff and activities.

Our History

In 1983, the Washington DC Taiwanese Language School, later renamed Washington DC Taiwanese School (WDCTS), was founded by a group of Taiwanese Americans in the Washington DC area. It was established with the aim of preserving and promoting Taiwanese heritage, languages, and lifestyles for future generations while also inviting the American public to experience and understand this unique culture. Initially, the school’s programs included “literary (文), martial (武), and recreational (康樂)” activities. Zhuang Liuxiong (莊六雄) served as the first principal of the school in the 1983-84 school year.
